before the word, there was the land.

before the map, the water.

before the name, the fog.

the lakes did not know themselves as great.

the river did not know where one county ended and another began.

the marsh kept its cranes.

the cedar leaned into the wind.

the stone slept beneath the shallow soil.

nothing waited to be named.

it was here.

it was enough.

then came the word.

and the word meant well.

we named the water so that we might return to it.

we drew the line so that we might share what lay within it.

we measured the field so that many might be fed.

we numbered the days so that we might find one another in time.

these were small mercies.

but a name can become a boundary.

a boundary can become a fence.

a fence can become forgetting.

the measure became the thing measured.

the record became the memory.

the map was laid upon the earth

until we could no longer see the earth beneath it.

this was not malice.

it was care that forgot how to remain soft.

there are ways of returning.

to walk widdershins is to turn against the clock

and follow the spiral inward.

not backward into some untouched world,

for there is no untouched world to return to,

but beneath.

beneath the fence.

beneath the ledger.

beneath the names we mistook for the things themselves.

we do not burn the word.

we turn it in the hand.

we loosen it.

we listen for what still breathes inside it.

the same tongue that named the land

may yet learn how to address it.

and there, beneath the naming,

something waited.

not hidden.

overlooked.

it lived in the fog-bank and the ditchwater,

in limestone fissures and cedar roots,

in the culvert beneath the county road,

in the drowned timber beyond the harbor light.

kin of marsh and field,

of freshwater, fungus, stone, moth, bone, and ember.

small gods without temples.

household saints of abandoned things.

keepers of the places no one thought holy enough to keep.

patient as lichen.

quiet as spores beneath snow.

they had been speaking all along.

we had only forgotten how slowly a voice might speak.

we do not invent them.

we listen.

we leave offerings of attention.

we follow tracks that may belong to nothing.

we draw what we glimpse at the edge of certainty.

we do not ask first whether they are real.

we ask what becomes visible

when we treat the world as alive enough to answer.

we do not draw them to capture them.

we draw them to keep memory company.

and so we keep six chambers against the forgetting.

these are not six kingdoms.

they are six doors.

none remains shut for long.

each creature, mark, story, relic, and rumor

is one glyph in a cosmology without walls.

no final catalogue will hold it.

no map will finish it.

there will always be something living beyond the margin.

and so, not as law but as blessing:

reveal the overlooked.

make kin before making use.

turn the map over.

keep memory company.

walk the old path crookedly,

and go widdershins.

and, if you walk slowly enough,

the land may remember you back.
