Among the naturalist’s paraphernalia inside the wagon: graphite nubs worn to the wood, dirtied brushes, a water jar with pigment residue, pressed plant samples, a knife with wood curls still clinging to it, calipers, a compass, a magnifying glass, wax seals. Set apart from the working tools, the relics. A pouch of carved stones. A journal wrapped in twine. Animal hair sealed in an envelope.

Everything here bears the trace of its maker. The hand knows what the mind has forgotten. These are not bought objects. They were shaped, one at a time, by someone who has since slipped out of ordinary time, and they keep the warmth of that shaping the way a drawer keeps the smell of the wood it was cut from.
